  • Project management
  • Educational studies

Students take a combination of general education, specialized minor and elective courses, creating a customized, interdisciplinary program of study. Plus, this BLS program is unique in its competency-based, self-paced design, which helps students take advantage of work experience, prior education and knowledge in order to earn their bachelor’s degree in as few as 12 months.

What Similarities Do the 5 Minor Options Share?

All of UMPI’s online BLS degree options require students to complete 120 credit hours of coursework. This includes 40 credit hours of general education courses, 18 to 21 credit hours of minor-specific core courses, and 62 credit hours of electives. A considerable amount of study across all minor options incorporates the development of critical thinking, communication skills and problem-solving skills. These skills are widely considered essential in the modern workplace.

Accounting: Core coursework for the accounting minor focuses on various aspects of financial and managerial accounting as well as in-depth study of taxation. Through electives, students can further tailor their degree.

Management: The management minor covers comprehensive aspects of business management such as leadership, organizational change and business communications. These subjects are further applied to studies of specialized department management and functions. This study prepares students to work in numerous industries and various managerial roles. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that management occupations as a whole commanded the “highest wage of all the major occupational groups” in 2020 with a median annual wage of over $109,000.

Management Information Systems: Coursework in this minor option focuses on the in-depth study of subjects like business analytics, database management systems, business computing and information systems. This degree prepares students to work in many fields at the intersection of data science, tech development and business management. Job growth in this area is much faster than the average for all occupations. And compensation is accordingly substantial. For instance, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that median pay for computer and information systems managers in 2020 was $151,150 per year.

Project Management: This minor emphasizes the development of critical and creative thinking, communication, and problem-solving. Students learn how to develop, execute and complete projects while managing risk and maintaining schedule and budget alignment. Project managers have career versatility and mobility, as they can work in many departments in numerous industries on a permanent, temporary or contractual basis. According to 2021 data from PayScale, project managers make an average annual salary of $75,167.

Educational Studies: Coursework in this minor provides preparation for higher-level roles within schools and other organizations. Students can expect to gain strategies for classroom management, lesson planning, and technology integration in learning environments. Graduates of this program have a variety of career opportunities available, ranging from daycare or school administration to community outreach and literacy program development.

The unique, flexible approach of UMPI’s competency-based online BLS degree programs can help students gain respected, field-specific credentials while still pursuing a variety of educational and professional goals. Plus, the essential critical-thinking and communication skills students will develop through this degree program can greatly increase their employability in a variety of fields, allowing a high degree of flexibility and mobility in work.
