Earn a Bachelor's Degree Online at Your Own Pace

YourPace degree programs offered at the University of Maine at Presque Isle (UMPI) are part of a new concept in online education. Students can earn credits based on their real-world experience as well as their previous education. Then they can learn new skills and competencies on their own schedule.

YourPace gives students the opportunity to earn a bachelor's degree in a fraction of the time it would take through traditional programs — and at a fraction of the cost.

How It Works

UMPI offers a number of YourPace online bachelor's degree programs:

  • Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration – Accounting Concentration
  • Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration – Management & Leadership Concentration
  • Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration – Project Management Concentration
  • Bachelor of Liberal Studies – Accounting Minor
  • Bachelor of Liberal Studies – Management Minor
  • Bachelor of Liberal Studies – Management Information Systems Minor
  • Bachelor of Liberal Studies – Project Management Minor

The degree programs are divided into courses that build on a student's real-world experiences.

Students may participate in a readiness assessment within each competency. This is where they demonstrate mastery over knowledge they've already gained through work or courses they've taken previously. YourPace gives students the opportunity to move faster through areas where they already have experience so they can take the time they need to learn content they may not be as familiar with.

Some adult students trying to earn an online bachelor's in time-bound degree programs experience frustration. They already know a lot of the material and feel that they're wasting their time. Competency-based education addresses this frustration.

"You may have taken a course a while back, but you're using those skills every day," said Carolyn Dorsey, UMPI Associate Professor of Business Management. "You're practicing what you learned in that classroom when you're on the job or in your community.

"I'm really passionate about working with people and saying, 'What do you need from us?'" Dorsey said. "We don't want to put anything on our students that would restrict how successful they can be, or their time to completion of the program."

Significant Savings

Competency-based education not only reduces frustration, it also saves students a great deal of money. Another advantage of the YourPace programs is affordability.

A YourPace degree program from UMPI gives students the opportunity to take as many courses as they would like per session for a flat tuition cost of $1,400. You could obtain your degree in as few as 12 months and pay less than $10,000.

The faster students advance in their studies, the more money they will save.

There are other financial savings associated with taking online courses. Students who go the on-campus route often have to pay for housing in dorms or nearby apartments — not necessary when you study online. Students in a YourPace program do not have to pay for textbooks or parking. They also avoid the costs associated with a commute to and from campus, such as gas and tolls.

The Biggest Challenges of Online Education — and How to Overcome Them

There are challenges associated with studying online, however. Because there are no classes at set times, it is up to students to be self-disciplined and stay on track with their learning. Some students worry that they will lack motivation or face difficulties studying if they don't see their instructors and fellow students in person. Not to worry; many online students say they have more contact with instructors and academic success coaches in the digital space than they would in a classroom.

For example, discussion boards may be required, but participation isn't a problem for introverts who may not raise their hand in class. Because there are no set class times, many students find it helpful to set a personal study schedule. Organization is also key, and setting calendar reminders is a way to take charge of your time.

With a bit of planning and UMPI's YourPace online programs, students can earn a bachelor's degree experiencing fewer hassles, spending less money, and taking less time.
